xlayer legion est 2000.

Established June/July 2000. Formed by ph00k, Czar and ex, it was kept quiet until enough members were recruited to form an active war team. The inclusion of such players as KeNzO, Homme, spooKa, Ush, Metalant and Link provided xl with a strong base of foundation as they entered the world that is HPB CS. xl pretty much dominated from the word go, and, with no real decent HPB teams in the scene, the community seemed pretty bleak until clans such as UC and HSBS emerged. With Ush quitting CS, and ex going inactive, xl managed to recruit a player by the name of ReapeR, who became the perfect replacement. After a few wars against X and UC, it looked like XL were falling below the benchmark, especially since losing Homme and spooKa to the LPB scene and Metalant’s inactivity. Faced with a dilemma, XL recruited another few players such as the unknown JSG, -moldy from the illustrious A.W.O.L, !mm0rtal from gzer0 and some random named method who came out of nowhere after spending most of his time on 3FL Perth servers. With a bit of work the new team molded in to a very effective war machine, taking down such teams as HSBS, X and UC in some very entertaining wars.

After a poor performance in HPBFest, and HPBLeague 1 XL gradually fell to inactivity. After losing ReapeR to X, we went through a down patch. After a couple of months we crawled our way back up, only to loose our leader ph00k to inactivity. Czar was kicked due to some poor form, !mm0rtal became inactive, and moldy became a LPB. It looked like the end for XL, until method decided to take the reigns and recruit some fresh talent such as players like Walrus, k0riC and peek(aka kram). Shortly after X died, and XL still didn’t seem to have enough players. We decided to merge with the recently formed Godsent, our team took place as a top clan once again with the likes of jAb[R]oNi, bink, frozen, iso, dungy, and tekK. Although not long after many of them left, with only two staying, bink and frozen. Never-the-less xl was once again back at the top of HPB CS after several months of inactivity and poor form. Eventually we recruited an unknown player in the HPB community by the name of thanatos, which turned out to be an excellent idea on Walrus’ part. At the time sporting a team of method boneh seeker trav peek grim and everyones favorite player tolkien. But over time we lost peek, Walrus and bink to the LPB scene. With no real talent left in the community, we decided to take a break, promising that XL would return. A few of the players decided to join up with the recently re-formed tRiumph, which basically became a top team in the HPB community in a very short period of time. After enjoying HPBFest success with triumph, we had an old XL “remembrance” war, and after demolishing crayons 22-2 on nuke, it seemed like there was still hope left for XL (and a chance for the promise of return to be fulfilled). Thus XL was reformed, and had a few players come in by the likes of Hinata, SnydeR, unitus, flukeh, waylander, RewT, and the return of Reaper. Method eventually went LPB, and gave the reigns to seeker (thanatos) and Fawad to lead. XL once again has become a top HPB team after their recent demise, and is arguably the one of the best HPB team Australia’s ever seen.

From here many players came through xl, seeing the likes of meatman, sven, warscars, heejin and atomic. Many of the old moved to broadband connections as it became more widely available, xl said goodbye to seeker, peek, boneh(k0riC) and some others as a new wave of players joined. With fawad becoming inactive and LPB he left Stevey(flukeh) the reigns to continue xl as its 4th leader. With atomic leaving to longtime enemies uR, and the inactivity of warscars, this left a gap for stevey to fill. Here he recruited dragonX, bish and ateknogod. It was fair to say that this lineup did not fill the standards that xl had set in the past, as such with some nudging from hinata the lineup was changed fairly quickly, with the reintroduction of atomic, sven and maz. When Stevey moved to lpb this left atomic the reigns, membership problems and upcoming AusHPB competitions to win. Warscars and sven quit cs, so spotting some talent amongst other clans he recruited aphex and ragnarokEX to bring xl back to the top. Against a dwindling hpb community, the team eagerly took on the monthly competitions, taking AusHPB fests 6,7,9,11 and 13, always against long time rivals uR!. As Atomic moved to lpb the team became inactive, leaving xlayer legion for the second time in a number of years without a cs team.

Over a year later a new xl team formed, signaling the end of xl’s affiliation with hpb cs. Sporting members from destinatus and geni, and led by Hinata and atomic xl featured grim nam cruxis brinx oks avengrr. It is hard to measure success amoungst the current cs community, due to the lack of competitions, and the community rife with coding and cheating. General immaturity and arrogance also destroys any sort of 'community' feel. You are able to see the parallels between the current cs community and the hpb community of old, and see the same patterns as before as the community collapsed upon itself. xl will always be against any cheating and scripting and appreciates playing teams that have the same values. The purchase of a new website was made and the history was updated as of 8/04/06.

The new xl team went through various changes throughout 2006, and with a spurt of online competitions we performed fairly well. Winning back to back Concept Gaming competitions and placing 2nd in their 32 team comp we entered all comps as favorites, always placing top 2. Through various members inactivity new players were recruited, rize and frenzal followed by short stints from fez, jules and rewt. Never managing to find the enthusiasm and activity that we wanted, and feeling that there was no one we wished to recruit the team takes a third break since 2004, waiting for the next incarnation in the future. Throughout the year xl moved for the first time to including multiple teams, spreading our wings into both counter-strike:source and condition zero. The cs:s team had previously achieved excellent results, but since joining xl had limited success, as the players began to lose interest in the game, and it was eventually disbanded. The condition zero squad made up of xl players and community members, saw the reintroduction of xl old schooler method to a leadership role within xl, supported by sidekick atomic the cz team took on the OGN Ladder Season 6, quickly rising to the top defeating comp favourites mortis in their second ever loss on the ladder to grab the #1 spot. After losing interest in the ladder due to administration problems the team was deleted, but always ready to re-introduce themselves to the game when the time is right. In a surprising turn of events, xl.cz teamed up with mortis to finish the OGN cz ladder latter in the season as they were struggling to find players. The xl/mortis combination took the finals series 2-1 over team fM. The trend continued as mortis gracefully exited at the end of the ladder, and xl continued to compete as a major favorite during the following season with the addition of drewflex and reaxion from mortis.

After a late 2006 break from cs 1.6 the team eagerly returned early 2007. Mixing very old xl HPB players(h34d5h07), with some of the newer xl recruits(ragnarokEX) the team was formed with the intent to improve. The xl battlers method, gRim and atomic returned to have another go at playing in xl. Yet to compete in any competitions the team has thus far found consistent results and is molding into a stable team for the future.

The new CS team ran into some early difficulties, mainly a lack of ambition to play anymore coupled with declining online standards of both quality and integrity of opposing teams. It should be noted that the 'duck-hop' exploit in counter-strike was one of the greatest demotivators for this current team and expelled most enthusiasm for a counter-strike team to be reformed in the future. Furthermore the team continues to age with a declining member count and extreme difficulty in finding players molded in the same cast as most of the xl community, from the dialup community. As it stands a continuation of the xl counter-strike dynasty is still to be seen, as motivation wanes even to attempt a revival.

Around this time team stalwart and now xl legend method brought the 'cute' catchphrase into the #xl channel. The word 'cute' took on further meaning with players associating it with anything in any context, often used to replace other adjectives that would make better sense. The nonsensical humour of the xl community further developed through ragnarokEX and checking on his 'keen', a magical force that exists in extreme quantitys within him that was developed as a reasonable explanation for uncanny skills and patience in games such as Diablo 2 and Defence of the Ancients.

Despite the 1.6 team struggling to maintain a full squad the cz division continued to perform. Midway through the inaugural CZAustralia Ladder season motivation waned slightly and we suffered back to back loses which in retrospect turned out to be an enormous help as it reinvigorated our campaign, and we stormed back into the finals bracket to win the ladder easily claiming the self proclaimed title of world CZ champions. Throughout our ladder season we begun the running joke of 'the secret weapon', a modified cs scoreboard with a clear background of which is credited to be our key to success.

In October of 2007 the long awaited Team Fortress 2 game was released, and captivated the attention of the xl community. Through this game we saw the return of some very old faces, the self imposed outcast boneh returned to the team (albeit still will not venture to the IRC channel), long time rival Pishk joined the team an old TFC veteran and ex-leader of uber robots, jth after spending some 'time in the desert' away from gaming hit back in striking form and surprising keen, Oks now a postgraduate Uni student allowed us to use his spare time, electro long time irc user and DoD fanatic moved his skills over to our new game, Joel after years of absence and our condition zero recruits reaxion and rtn also joined. The team also featured currently active players method, atomic, jinx and ragnarokEX to fill out a quality and charismatic team.

The GA TF2 Ladder proved to be a more worthwhile competition then it's counter-strike equivalent and the team currently sits at a 6-1 Win/Loss, we also become involved with the OzFortress competitions as xl has started strongly in the group stages of the inaugural Ozf TF2 Cup.
History updated as of the 6/2/08.

Motivation to play TF2 quickly dissipated over the next few months as frustrations grew amoungst the team with the competitive ruleset being imposed(8v8 crits on). Being a casual team a number of members drifted away and we attempted a brief spree of recruiting which only really quickened putting the team to rest as we found no additional members who brought the motivation needed to continue playing.

An AusHPB 1.6 Ladder for prize money was the catalyst behind putting together a new team in early 2008, the addition of united and geNx during this time brought immense enthusiasm back into the team and featuring a core 5 of geNx, united, atomic, ragnarokEX and rizE the team took out the ladder over gameplex in a well contested final. Shortly after the finals were completed in June the team went on a long break with no further competitions to play in and a further downturn in other teams activity.

Late 2008 saw a revival in online counter-strike, general interest in 1.6 peaked worldwide as CS:Source finally collapsed with the close of the CGS, realigning all major E-Sport communities with 1.6 and in particular a small but new injection of players into the 1.6 scene in Australia. The creation of 'ZYM' by the AusHPB team, a new online community which was developed to regrow the 1.6 community, began organising tournaments to play in along with a number of other organistions which signaled an appropriate time to bring the team back. Fizz-E was added to the team to bring us to a solid squad of 6 where we are currently competing in numerous competitions.
